# 8 Understanding the Solar Plexus Centre in Human Design: A Personal Journey Through Emotional Clarity
Lately, there’s been something stirring within me that I’ve been itching to share - a powerful shift that’s been unfolding during my advanced certification in Human Design. I’m about halfway through, and already, the insights have been nothing short of profound. One discovery, in particular, has been a game-changer: understanding the energy of the Solar Plexus Centre, especially in its undefined form.
Human Design, often described as an energetic blueprint, shows us how we’re wired to move through life. It helps us understand how we use our energy, how we interact with others, and ultimately how we can live in greater alignment with our true selves. The system weaves together ancient and modern wisdom - like astrology, the I Ching, the chakras, and quantum physics - to offer deep insight into our essence.
Among the nine energy centres in Human Design, the Solar Plexus holds the theme of emotion and awareness. And while all centres are important, this one struck a personal chord because it’s where I’ve experienced the most inner conflict - and now, the most healing.
Defined vs. Undefined Solar Plexus: The Emotional Contrast
In Human Design, the Solar Plexus Centre can be either defined or undefined. Neither is better than the other - there are no hierarchies in Human Design. Instead, each configuration offers different gifts, challenges, and lessons.
A defined Solar Plexus means you have a consistent emotional wave. You ride emotional highs and lows in cycles, generating your own feelings from within. On the other hand, an undefined Solar Plexus, like mine, doesn’t generate its own emotional energy. Instead, we amplify and absorb the emotions of others. We feel deeply - not because the emotions are ours, but because we’re energetically picking them up and reflecting them back, often with greater intensity.
At first glance, this might sound like a superpower. And in many ways, it is. People with undefined Solar Plexuses are incredibly empathetic, intuitive, and emotionally tuned in. But without awareness, this ability can become overwhelming - leading to confusion, burnout, and emotional instability.
Growing Up in a Sea of Emotional Waves
Here’s where it gets personal. I grew up in a big family - one of six siblings - and all of them (except one of my brothers), along with my mother and several significant figures in my life, are emotional Manifesting Generators. That means they have defined Solar Plexuses and naturally experience emotional highs and lows.
Now imagine being a child with an undefined Solar Plexus in that environment. I was soaking up everyone’s emotions like a sponge, amplifying them within my own body. I didn’t understand what was happening. All I knew was that I felt deeply emotional in group or family settings, but when I was alone, I felt... almost emotionally flat. Calm. Neutral. Sometimes even monotone.
For years, I judged myself harshly for this. I believed there was something wrong with me - that I was emotionally numb, or worse, cold. But through the lens of Human Design, I finally see the truth: I was never lacking emotion. I was simply feeling everyone else's and mistakenly thinking it was mine.
Emotional Conditioning and the Voice of Guilt
The conditioning from growing up this way runs deep. I developed a fear of emotional confrontation, constantly censoring myself to avoid upsetting others. I became hyper-aware of other people’s emotional states, always trying to manage the atmosphere, often at the expense of my own needs.
I carried inner narratives like:
“If I speak my truth, they’ll get upset.”
“It’s easier if I take on their pain.”
“If I feel this sad, there must be a reason. What’s wrong with me?”
These stories weren’t born from my truth - they were the voice of conditioning, shaped by an undefined centre trying to make sense of emotional waves that never belonged to me in the first place.
The Game-Changing Question: Is This Emotion Mine?
One of the most empowering tools I’ve gained is the ability to pause and ask, “Is this emotion mine?”
If it is, I give myself full permission to feel it, explore it, and honour it. But if I realise the emotion isn’t mine, I don’t need to hold onto it. I can let it pass through me, like a cloud drifting across the sky. I don’t have to internalise it or make it mean something about me.
This single shift has transformed my emotional world. I no longer feel tossed around by other people’s energy. Instead, I can remain grounded in my own centre and observe emotions with clarity and compassion.
How This Insight Changes Everything
Understanding my undefined Solar Plexus has helped me:
Set better energetic boundaries
Stop over-identifying with other people’s emotional states
Feel more emotionally neutral without judging myself
Reduce emotional burnout from taking on too much
Communicate more clearly and honestly, without fear
And this is just one centre. Human Design offers insights into all areas of your life - how you make decisions, express yourself, find your purpose, relate to others, and even how you digest food or manage time. Each energy centre tells a unique story.
Your Invitation: Explore Your Human Design
If you're curious about your own chart, I encourage you to look it up. There are many free tools online that can generate your Human Design chart with just your birth date, time, and location. (soon I will have my own link on my website to generate your free chart!)
It might feel overwhelming at first (I get it - it’s a complex system), but the insight it offers is life-changing. And you don’t have to navigate it alone.
If you’d like support in understanding your chart or would love a guided reading, I’d be honoured to walk you through it. This work is now a core part of what I bring into my coaching containers, and it’s bringing such rich transformation.
Final Thoughts
For those with undefined emotional centres: you are not broken. You are deeply sensitive, beautifully attuned, and energetically wise. But your feelings don’t always belong to you - and that awareness alone can liberate you from years of confusion and self-judgment.
We’re not here to carry what’s not ours. We’re here to witness, reflect, and learn how to come home to ourselves.
If this resonates with you, I’d love to hear from you. And stay tuned - I'll be sharing more insights and inviting special guests to join me on the podcast in upcoming episodes. Human Design has so much more to reveal, and we’re only just getting started.
